ScaleMP Extends SMP Capabilities to IBM’s x3850 X5 Servers
vSMP Foundation 3.0 with the new IBM System x3850 X5 delivers the largest x86 shared memory system in the world
Cupertino, Calif. – October 5, 2010 – ScaleMP, a leading provider of virtualization solutions for high-end computing, today announced that ScaleMP vSMP Foundation 3.0 is now available on IBM System x3850 X5. Together, vSMP Foundation 3.0 and IBM System x3850 X5 offer customers the freedom to choose the right balance of processing power and memory capacity for workloads, and the flexibility to scale virtual systems up as workload demands change. vSMP Foundation also delivers the ability to create one of the largest x86 shared-memory systems on the market.
“vSMP Foundation supports IBM’s system for next-generation computing and gives joint IBM and ScaleMP customers unsurpassed flexibility to shape and create the systems they need, whether they be two or 128 nodes,” said Shai Fultheim, founder and CEO of ScaleMP. “ScaleMP continues to be at the forefront of high performance computing systems by delivering powerful software tools that enable hardware providers to offer virtual SMP capabilities to their users.”
Based on IBM’s X-Architecture and part of the eX5 family, x3850 X5 supports a 1U MAX5 memory expansion unit, which adds an additional 32 DIMM slots per chassis (up to 96 DIMMs / 1.5TB total). Used in conjunction with vSMP Foundation, users can deploy a virtual SMP system with 512 processors, 4,096 cores and 64TB RAM across their x3850 X5 servers. These capabilities are unmatched by any other shared memory system in the industry and position vSMP Foundation with IBM System x3850 X5 as the largest x86 shared-memory system in the world.
“With vSMP Foundation, our customers can quickly and easily deploy a virtual SMP across IBM servers for high performance computing needs, whether they are working with clusters or need a larger system,” said Brian Sanders, director, IBM System X. “IBM and ScaleMP enable our customers to let their project determine their needs, rather than legacy hardware.”
About vSMP Foundation
vSMP Foundation aggregates multiple industry-standard off-the-shelf x86 servers into one single virtual high-end system. vSMP Foundation provides customers with an alternative to traditional expensive symmetrical multiprocessing (SMP) systems and also offers simplified clustering infrastructure with a single operating system. It supports aggregation of up to 128 servers into a single virtual SMP system, providing customers with:
- Up to 64 TB of shared memory for large memory requirements
- Up to 1,024 processors (8,192 cores) virtual SMP, proven scalability and record-breaking memory bandwidth
- Ease of use and lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) for applications, with simplified cluster management and storage architecture
- Improved cluster utilization by providing a centralized and consolidated architecture
ScaleMP is the leader in virtualization for high-end computing, providing maximum performance and lower total cost of ownership (TCO). The innovative Versatile SMP™ (vSMP) architecture aggregates multiple x86 systems into a single virtual x86 system, delivering an industry-standard, high-end symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) computer. Using software to replace custom hardware and components, ScaleMP offers a new, revolutionary computing paradigm.
