                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Referred to as the “Missing  Middle” problem, a term                              coined by the U.S.Council on Competitiveness to describe the              relative  lackof HPC adoption among small and medium-size                manufacturing companies.Indeed, Intersect360  Research                    found  that while close to 60% manufacturers with over 10,000            employees  utilize HPC,  the adoption rate is below 10% for                  those  with under 100 employees.

        These statistics indicate a large potential market in                                manufacturing and other industries that might  benefit from                greater levels of adoption of entry-level and midrange-size systems. Cost is of course  a  factor in adoption, as well as the steep learning curve, and those factors are explicitly addressed  by  vSMP ClusterOne. There is of course the cost of the system, and commodity-of-the-shelf (COTS)             clusters have proven the deliver the best compute-power per dollar, but other costs beyond the hardware lurk, and in manufacturing particularly the cost of software must be considered.

The overall licensing cost for any applications with a per-node licensing schemes could be reduced if the cluster is a single
logical entity (a single virtual large server).The SMP-like system has other potential cost savings beyond Capital expenditures. The single system is usually easier to manage, which could eliminate or delay the need to invest in additional system administration capabilities. And perhaps most importantly, it behaves much the same as a super-sized workstation, which not only feels familiar to the engineer using it but allows for ease in portability of models and applications from a workstation to a cluster enabled with vSMP ClusterOne.

More than 30% of ScaleMP’s installed base comes from users that could use standard HPC clusters but chose not to, and more than 20% of the installed base comes from the aforementioned engineering and manufacturing segments, with structural analysis or fluid
