Overview

vSMP Foundation Standalone enables the creation of a single virtual system by aggregating multiple industry-standard x86 systems. This software add-on creates virtual systems ranging from 4 to 32 processors (128 cores) and up to 1 TB of shared memory.

vSMP Foundation Standalone uses off-the-shelf systems and InfiniBand to offer tremendous price/performance advantages for the HPC market. In essence, it provides a unique way to leverage entry-level systems to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO). It delivers the operational simplicity of traditional shared-memory systems while keeping the acquisition cost associated with clusters.

vSMP Foundation Standalone is tuned for Intel Xeon (dual- and quad-core) processors and available for select platforms. vSMP Foundation Devices loaded with vSMP Foundation Standalone are available in USB form factor.

Supported system configurations:

• Discrete server systems: vSMP Foundation Standalone aggregates two systems connected back-to-back to provide a very cost-effective 4 to 8 processor (32 cores) virtual system. This offering provides performance, power and rack density advantages compared to traditional 4 to 8 processors systems.
• Blade server systems: vSMP Foundation Standalone aggregates from 2 to 16 blades within a single blade chassis using an integrated InfiniBand switch. This offering is ideal for HPC applications benefitting from large memory, high core-count coupled with shared memory. It also simplifies cluster deployments by reducing the number of operating systems to one.
