Users can scale servers based on the AMD Opteron™ platform beyond four processors and 512GB RAM using vSMP FoundationTM
Cupertino, Calif. – September 20, 2011 – ScaleMPTM, a leading provider of virtualization solutions for high-end computing, today announced a strategic collaboration with AMD for vSMP FoundationTM to support AMD Opteron processor-based servers. The collaboration enables users to scale AMD-based servers beyond four processors and create AMD Opteron processor-based systems with up to 512 processors and 64TB of memory. vSMP Foundation will support the current AMD Opteron 6100 Series processor as well as the upcoming AMD Opteron processors, code-named “Interlagos”, leveraging the new x86 “Bulldozer” core.
“The ability for our customers to aggregate individual AMD Opteron processor-based servers into a virtual high-end symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) computer with vSMP Foundation is a game-changer,” said Margaret Lewis, director, product marketing, AMD. “Our customers can now easily build a cost-effective large memory and CPU system out of up to 128 servers to help meet their high performance computing needs.”
Traditional multi-processor systems require the creation of a custom chipset and board to enable processor communication and shared memory. The larger the system is, the more complex and costly the required solution. vSMP Foundation creates a single virtual symmetric multiprocessing system (SMP) by combining multiple commodity servers and enabling multiple physical systems to function as a single logical system.
“Supporting AMD servers has been a goal of ours. AMD has a long history of offering powerful, yet cost-effective solutions and we have always seen a natural fit,” said Shai Fultheim, founder and CEO of ScaleMP. “Through this collaboration, ScaleMP enables AMD customers to create large virtual SMPs that will lower the TCO for organizations – enabling customers to focus their time and budgets on their applications and workloads.”
The upcoming release of vSMP Foundation will support aggregating up to 128 AMD processor-based servers, providing customers with up to 64TB RAM and 512 sockets, offering thousands of cores. A limited release of vSMP Foundation will be available to customers starting October 1, 2011, followed by a general availability November 21, 2011. About vSMP Foundation
vSMP Foundation aggregates multiple, industry-standard, off-the-shelf x86 servers into one single virtual high-end system. vSMP Foundation provides customers with an alternative to traditional, expensive symmetrical multiprocessing (SMP) systems and also offers simplified clustering infrastructure with a single operating system. It supports aggregation of up to 128 servers into a single virtual SMP system, providing customers with:
- Up to 64 TB of shared memory for large memory requirements;
- Up to 1,024 processors (10,240 cores) virtual SMP, proven scalability and record-breaking memory bandwidth;
- Ease of use and lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) for applications, with simplified cluster management and storage architecture;
- Improved cluster utilization, by providing a centralized and consolidated architecture.
ScaleMP is the leader in virtualization for high-end computing, providing maximum performance and lower total cost of ownership (TCO). The innovative Versatile SMPTM(vSMP) architecture aggregates multiple Intel Architecture systems into a single virtual Intel Architecture system, delivering an industry-standard, high-end symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) computer. Using software to replace custom hardware and components, ScaleMP offers a new, revolutionary computing paradigm. For more information, please call +1 (408) 342-0330 or visit www.ScaleMP.com.
